Character Sheet Last Updated: September 12, 2016
Name: Marina Beauvais
Approximate Age: Mid twenties.
Gender Presentation: Female.
Height: Six feet, give or take a half-inch.
Build: Thin, with not a lot of either muscle or fat, though there's more of the former than the latter. Not very curvy, either.
Hair: Thick, golden blond hair that reaches until the midback when unbound; for practical reasons, however, it is usually kept up or in a braid.
Eyes: Large, almost too large for her thin face, and rather beautiful for the same, with ocean blue irises framed with short, thick lashes.
Dress Style: Most of the time, she wears conservatively-cut clothes in varying shades of blue, cream, and gray, as well as many different fabrics; however, when on archaeological digs, she usually wears earth colored clothes of cheap cotton, with pants.
Currently, she's been wearing darker shades than she usually does; this of course means she never wears cream. However, despite her grief, she doesn't wear black, either.
Currently, she's been wearing darker shades than she usually does; this of course means she never wears cream. However, despite her grief, she doesn't wear black, either.
Distinguishing Features: Her hair, her eyes, her skin, her height.
Notable Possessions: Wears a necklace at all times--a thin, golden chain with a pendant of a blue stone of some sort, opaque and veined with pyrite. Most recently aquired a book that she constantly reads; when she does not carry it with her on digs, she puts it in a locked drawer in one of the caves under her home. A harp.
Manner of Speaking: Careful and formal. A faint French (Southern France, specifically Rousillon) accent can be heard in her voice.
General Attitude: Cold, disdainful, stoic, suspicious. Muses a lot.
General Impression: Must have the longest stick up her ass, the way she acts. Every once in a while, however, there is a flicker of something behind her eyes...
The Basics
Full Name: Marina Bernadette Beauvais
Aliases: Marina, 'rina, the Sangfroid Scholar
Birthday: March 23
Chiropteromantic Sign: She doesn't know yet, and doesn't plan to. Who puts stock in such flim-flam, anyway?
Age: 26
Additional Physical Description: Her face is rather thin; what most people notice though, is her skin, still tanned, though nowadays looking a little lighter than before, after a little more than three years in the Neath--this is partially due to her blood heritage.
Distinguishing Features: Other than the above, none, really.
Manner of Movement: She moves suprisingly gracefully despite her height, with a stately posture and all.
Physical Health: Altogether average; its enough to go on expeditions, and that's good enough for her.
Mental Health: More or less okay, but she has quite a bit of emotional baggage, especially where her sister is concerned. Has been added onto with the discovery of her sister's death and Esse's death. Every once in a while, especially around Christmas, she has dreams of plains and horses. Also dreams about chess and sermons, for some reason.
Positive Traits: Patient, careful, loyal (when given the need to), empathetic, controlled, focused, kind.
Negative Traits: Judgemental, distrustful, ruthless (at times), quick to annoyance, dismissive, disdainful, paranoid. Not very self-aware.
Quirks & Habits: Uses the phrases 'shall we say' and 'as for' a lot, among others. Never uses contractions. Peppers her speech with French every once in a while. Likes to write labels, notes, and most of her accounts in Catalan, half to practice and half out of paranoia. Speaking of the latter language, she also quotes the Bible, when not in English, of course, solely in Catalan as well.
Vices: She's pretty restrained, over all, an extreme reaction to...well, her sister's debauched behaviour.
Likes: Tea, wine, archaeology (especially, and with a specialization on, the Fourth City), quiet, conversing in languages other than English, the sky, playing the harp, the sun, the Surface in general, helping the unfortunate.
Dislikes: Loud, cheaty, unprepared students, most libraries, reading fiction, the Neath (it's complicated), coffee, general debauchery, people who pry, not being taken seriously as a lecturer, sweets.
Getting Things Done
Getting Things Done
What are your primary focuses, in terms of the four main stats?
Watchful (the observant and deductive side, not so much the intelligent side), followed by Persuasive (she lived long enough in high society for it to be second nature). Shadowy is middling, but its decent enough for a woman who sticks out like a sore thumb in London's black and grey and beige.
What are your weaknesses? Do you have a ‘Dump Stat’?
Let's be honest here, Marina can't fight to save her life. She isn't athletic at all, actually, other than dancing and a little swimming.
Allies & Associates: Her maid-of-all-work and part-time employee, Danni Flint the former costermonger. Has connections in the academic world and is well respected, despite her gender...by those that matter, at least (the Provost--what a decent chap). The Catholic minority of the city.
Pets: She doesn't really like animals. She used to have a bird, but she would never force anything like that to live down here.
Connections:
Highest Connection: The Church; she is a very generous tither and devout Catholic.
Second highest connection: Summerset College; they're the ones who fund her, after all.
Lowest Connection: Bohemians. She will never forgive them, even after her sister died.
Enemies: Less enemies, and more 'dislike': Society, criminals, the docks, the Tomb Colonists, revolutionaries, the Great Game, Constables...and Bohemians, most of all. Though she will never admit it to anyone who aren't her two friends (and maybe Bar in detective-mode), whoever killed her sister. Cheaters, liars, and all of the odious littler vermin that make up her class and coworkers.
Ambition: Heart’s Desire. She still longs to go back home, but that is not her only wish, now; now she wants to bring Eskil with her, even just once, and even if they are no longer romantically involved.
Other Goals: To uncover as many secrets of the Fourth City as she can. Currently, find out who in the world killed her sister.
Finance: She does expeditions, is paid a small stipend by and writes papers for the University, is commissioned every once in a while by the Shuttered Palace, and has her own appraisal business; all these together, as well as her general stinginess (other than party attire, of course--one must spend money to look decent, unfortunately) give her a comfortable, middle-class life, though not enough to not think about money.
Residence: A cottage on the very outskirts of the last observatory tower before the hill goes into the marsh, with the address 12 Hightower Observatory.
Notable Possessions: Her pendant, a stone of blue jasper on a thin chain of gold, was a gift from her now late sister Lynnette. Her private collection of Fourth City relics. A very interesting book, authored by one Jenson Shepherd. A magnificent harp, gifted to her by her former beau. A photo album of Rome from Middy. Two dresses from her old life--one yellow and pink one that Lynnette left behind in their shared lodgings, never used by her until the 1892 All Hallows party, and a cream dress that she used for the Attford-Fenwick 1893 anniversary party.Favoured Weapon: Her tongue and her wit, hopefully.
Combat Style: Not get into fights at all.
Questions of Some Importance
Have you got a...
Boat? Nope.
Club? Nope.
Affiliation? Nope.
Faction? Church.
Background
Life Before London: Born a chateau outside of Perpignan to an owner of vinyards, a member of the la moyenne bourgoisie, and a socialite from Paris, both being half-Catalan by blood. After her mother died from being hit by a cart (as well as other implications from that time of unrest in Paris), her father soon remarried a woman from Andorra, the daughter of hacienda owners, who treated her stepchildren with as much love as if they were her own blood.
How did you Fall?: It's complicated, but let's say it involves society, bohemes, ruin, lots of death, and her sister. And possible revolutionaries.
A Brief History of Life in London: Its been fine, but she misses the sun. And her sister. Oh, and she fell in love, though the relationship didn't work out so good.
Religion: Very devoutly Catholic.
Occupation: Archaeologist, appraiser, occasional composer for the harp. Officially a Honorary Research Fellow for Summerset, and contributes to research papers and decor accordingly; unofficially fills in for lecturers for no pay.
Hobbies & Interests: Archaeology, playing the harp, wine-tasting, jigsaw puzzles, dance, swimming.
Talents: Again, can play harp. Is an excellent dancer. For someone with not a whole lot of formal archaeology experience, learned the profession, and assessment practices, very well.
Un-Talents: Can't play sports, or fight, to save her life. Not very good at researching via reading.
Education: A governess, internships, and informal education looking around museums, ruins, and pawnshops.
Languages: English, French, Catalan; due to the latter she can understand some Spanish and pronounce it alright, though she can't speak it without a reference. Some Correspondence, though far from fluent, as well as quite a bit of the flower-and-blob language of the Fourth City. Used to be good at Latin, due to Roman-era archaeological digs on the Surface, but now its dropped to decent at best, a little less than passable at worst.
Family: Father, Emile, dead due to a heart attack; mother Adelais, dead from getting hit by a cart (officially, though riots from the reconstruction may have played a part in the whole affair); stepmother, Eulàlia, wasted away (a broken heart, basically); older sister, Lynnette Adelais, who might as well be dead, and now actually is.
The Relationship Stuff
Relationship Status: Single and not looking. It's too soon after her first one.
Sexual Orientation: Straight, but frigid.
Anything Else?: Is half Catalan by birth (mother and father were both half), and her stepmother, who had been there since she was six, was fully Catalan, so...yeah, that explains her skin colour and the language. Her stepmother had a hard time speaking French.
How does your character feel about...
Sentient Nonhumans? Rubbery Men she is sympathetic to, and dislikes the prejudice towards them. Everything else she's decent with, at least on the outside.
What about Tomb-Colonists? She wants nothing to do with them; let dust be dust, in her opinion.
Devils and Hell? Feels a strange mix of pity and disgust.
The Masters? Doesn't really care, unless it is in the framework of her studies.
The Bazaar? It seriously creeps her out, especially the Correspondence on its walls...
Social Issues? (sexism/racism/classism.....) She has never been one for race boundaries, as she was victim to that as well, but she believes in order, and classes are part of that order, though one can and should have the opportunity to move up. As for issues with regards to one's sex...complicated. She doesn't believe in women fighting physically, for one, though she probably would not try to stop them.
Religion? Very Catholic, and means it. A constant and a reservoir of strength.
Temperance? She likes imbibing herself every once in a while, though she generally approves of the notion.
